Chamber Calls on Government to End the Federal Carbon Tax

News

The Pictou County Chamber of Commerce today urged the Government of Canada to end the federal carbon tax ahead of the planned tax increase scheduled for April1, 2024. The Chamber said their decision is based on the impact of inflation, interest rates, and ongoing efforts to recover from losses incurred during the pandemic.

The local Chamber decision is based in part on data provided by the Atlantic Provinces Chamber which indicates two-thirds of Atlantic Canadian businesses report experiencing negative consequences, with a majority indicating the impact of the carbon tax is extremely negative. This evidence underscores the urgency of addressing the detrimental consequences of the tax on local economies.

“As a Chamber, we witness firsthand the challenges faced by our members and the communities they service in navigating the current economic landscape,” stated Jack Kyte, Executive Director of the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce.

“While we recognize the importance of environmental stewardship and combating climate change, we cannot ignore the immediate financial strain imposed by the carbon tax.”

The Chamber is advocating for increased government investment in organizations like Efficiency Nova Scotia which assists businesses to reduce their carbon emissions. By supporting organizations focused on sustainable practices and offering viable alternatives, the Chamber aims to promote environmental responsibility while safeguarding economic stability.

In light of the pressing concerns raised by businesses across the region, the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce urges swift action from policymakers to alleviate the burden of the federal carbon tax. By prioritizing the needs of businesses and communities, together, we can foster a resilient and sustainable future for all.

Join with the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce in calling on the Government of Canada to immediately halt the planned increase in the federal carbon tax.
